”In my Sketchbook of Jazz legend Julian Lee, I am not trying to produce tactile representations of pictorial images, but rather explore how we can draw images using the Mind’s Eye.
to Braille readers, this work is an intimate, descriptive portrait of a dear family friend. Evoked from a series of sketchy recollections and impressions, beginning with memories from my
childhood and ending with quotes from a recent visit.
To non Braille readers, the embossed dots are an abstraction of the promised subject matter indicated by the title of the work. They take on a hieroglyphic quality as the imagination seeks to transform the dots into pictures.
The open frame is an invitation to find inspiration in the texture of the work.”
